2018 Schwabacher Recital Series

Mark Morash, San Francisco Opera Center's Director of Musical Studies comments: 'I am particularly excited by the Debussy songs, which are at times intimate, remote, then epic. Britten's set of Auden poems are some of his finest songs, full of majesty, despair and desire. And we are thrilled to partner with San Francisco Opera Principal Clarinet Jose Gonzalez Granero in two groups on this program. The Griffes songs are an arrangement by San Francisco Ballet Music Librarian Matthew Naughtin for soprano, clarinet and piano. We found some wonderful folksongs set by the British composer and pianist John McCabe that use the same combination, adding a wonderful touch of lightness to the second half of the program.'

Dance Maze

Simon Desbruslais, trumpet
Jakob Fichert, piano

To include:
McCABE: Sonata after William Byrd's Haec Dies
Tom Armstrong: Dance Maze (first performance)

This programme explores an instrumental combination capable of great power and excitement. Senior Lecturer in Music, Tom Armstrong, occupies the centrepiece of the recital with the world premiere of his Dance Maze, a piece that can exist in multiple forms - as a duo and as solos for trumpet or piano.

John McCabe's 2014 Sonata was commissioned by Simon Debruslais, and derives its underlying material from William Byrd’s motet Haec Dies from his 1591 collection of Cantiones Sacrae. An outline of the motet is 'hidden' within the texture of the music, but never stated directly. The Sonata employs that beautiful instrument, the flugelhorn (beloved of Vaughan Williams and Miles Davis) for the first two main sections, switching to D trumpet (familiar from Baroque music) for the final part, which is faster than the earlier ones. The first section is moderately-paced and obsessively circles around particular intervals, notably parallel or near-parallel fifths (possibly McCabe's revenge on the academic world). The middle part of the work is slow, framed by very brief scherzando trio-like sections.

Landscapes of the Mind - the music of John McCabe

Kreutzer Quartet
Linda Merrick, clarinet
Aaron Schorr, piano
Participating artists from the Royal Northern College of Music, Chethams School of Music and Manchester University

A two-day festival celebrating the 75th birthday of one of Britain's most respected composers. John McCabe's life is a musical journey which is vibrant, optimistic, explosive; his orchestrations a vivid and vast palette of colours and timbres; and his rhythms exciting, restless and striking. His paintbrush then portrays beautiful broad melodies, lyricism and a distinct harmonic language. All concerts will be introduced by Professor George Odam, the author of the book Landscapes of the Mind, and we are lucky that this festival takes place in the presence of the composer himself.

One of the brightest of the new crop of vocal groups specialising in early music, Stile Antico won a Gramophone Award in 2009 for its collection 'Song of Songs'.

This typically resourceful programme for Wigmore Hall's Early Music and Baroque Series contrasts English sacred masterpieces from the Elizabethan and Stuart eras with contemporary works from the European continent, and will also demonstrate rare versatility in introducing the London première of a piece by leading British composer John McCabe.

Day-School on Haydn Piano Sonatas with John McCabe

During the lifetime of Josef Haydn the piano underwent huge changes in design and playing techniques and Haydn's own writing for the instrument reflects these changes. This day school is given by John McCabe, whose monumental recordings of the complete Haydn piano music remain amongst the most authoritative interpretations available.
